The Master of Quilts, Grandma Kim Pilnam
From her voice alone, you can feel Grandma Kim Pilnam’s brightness and cheer.
When she was young, she worked in a clothing store. After marriage, she and her late husband ran a quilt factory together.
She cut fabric, operated the sewing machine, and worked hard with the factory staff to make and sell quilts.
Those were the best years of her life—business was good, her children were growing well, and everything felt possible with hard work.
After her husband passed away and the business slowed, those times were hard both financially and emotionally. But Grandma Kim’s strong and cheerful spirit helped her endure through it all.
She discovered church by chance in her seventies, and now she says praying and talking at church is her greatest joy. She prays often for her children and for her youngest granddaughter, recently born.
Busy all her life providing for her family, Grandma Kim has never traveled abroad. But she’s happy with trips around Korea—visiting Jeju Island and hot springs with her sisters, enjoying every moment.
Growing up with many sisters, they were more like friends and remain her greatest support. One sister is currently facing surgery for cancer, and Grandma worries but stays positive, confident that all will be well.

이불의 장인, 김필남 할머니
목소리에서부터 ‘밝음’이 느껴지는 김필남 할머니!
젊었을 때부터 옷가게에서 일했고, 결혼하고나서는 지금은 세상을 떠난 할아버지와 함께 이불공장을 하면서 이불장사를 하셨다. 직접 천을 자르고 Sewing Machine을 하기도 하고 공장분들과 열심히 이불을 만들어 파셨다. 이 때가 인생에서 제일 좋았던 시기라고 한다. 장사도 잘 되고, 아들딸도 잘 크고 열심히 하면 되던 시간들이었기 떄문에..
반대로 할어버지가 떠나시고, 이불장사도 잘 안 되던 시기에는 경제적으로도 마음으로도 힘들었다고 한다. 하지만 워낙 씩씩하고 밝은 할머니시라 잘 견딜 수 있었던 것 같았다.
70대에 우연히 가게 된 교회였는데, 지금은 교회에서 기도하고 이야기하는 것이 제일 즐겁다고 한다.
아들 딸을 위해서, 얼마전 태어난 막내 손녀를 위해서 요즘을 기도를 많이 하신다.
늘 생계를 위해서 바쁘게만 살아오신 김필남 할머니!
해외여행은 한 번도 가지 못했지만, 국내여행도 갈 곳이 많아 충분히 좋으시다고 하신다.
여자 형제들과 제주도도 가고 온천 여행도 가고 하니 요즘 너무 즐거운 시간을 보내신다.
여자 형제가 많아 어렸을 때부터 서로에게 친구같은 존재로 지냈고 지금도 많이 의지하신다고..
할머니의 동생 중 한 분이 최근 암에 걸리셔서 수술을 앞두고 있어서 걱정을 많이 하셨다.
긍정적인 마음으로 살아오신 분이라
동생에 대한 걱정도 잘 될 것이라며 웃으셨다.
