A Life Through War and Hope, Grandma Gwangsoon Park
Grandma Gwangsoon Park was born in the Busan International Market area in 1948. At just three years old during the Korean War, she remembers the hardships that followed.
When she started school, the school placed near her house was still being used as a hospital, so she had to walk far to a mountain-side school.
By third grade, the school was restored, and she could attend nearby again.
Busan was filled with refugees, and many families lived in makeshift homes made of boxes. Fires were common, and there were children who spoke with North Korean accents.
As a middle schooler, she witnessed the April 19 Democratic Movement.
Even students joined protests, and tanks rolled through the streets—scenes she experienced firsthand, not just from textbooks.
Though she dreamed of becoming a nurse, she went straight to work after high school to support her family. She met her husband while working and had one son, who brought her great joy with his kind heart and strong academics.
She became a Catholic in middle school after meeting a nun teacher.
She later traveled to many Catholic sites in Europe, including France, Italy, and Spain—the latter being the most memorable.
Grandma Park believes in enjoying life while you can, especially during travel:
“Spend the money—do what you love. You might not get another chance.”
These days, she finds joy in line dancing.

전쟁을 겪은, 박광순 할머니
부산 국제시장 동네에서 태어나신 박광순 할머니,
1948년에 태어나서 1950년 625 전쟁 당시 3살 아이였다.
전쟁이 끝나고 초등학교를 입학할 당시, 가까운 동네 학교는 전쟁으로 다친 사람들을 치료하는 병원으로 사용되어 다른 동네 산기슭에 있는 학교에 입학하여 힘들게 학교를 다녔다.
초등학교 3학년이 되었을 때 병원으로 사용되었던 학교는 다시 학생들을 위한 학교가 되어 가까운 학교에 다니게 되었다.
그 당시 부산으로 피난 온 사람들이 많아 북한 사투리를 쓰는 친구들도 있었고 피난 온 사람들이 박스 같은 걸로 지은 집에 많이 살아 불도 아주 많이 났다고 한다.
중학교 때는 419 민주화 운동이 일어났고, 중학생, 고등학생도 길거리에 나가서 시위를 했고, 실제로 탱크도 거리를 다녔다고 한다.
책에서만 봤던 역사이야기를 할머니는 직접 겪으시고, 그 이야기를 들려주셨다.
간호사가 꿈이었지만 어려운 집안을 돕기 위해 고등학교 졸업을 하고 회사에 취직하셨다.
회사를 다니다 할아버지를 만나 결혼하게 되었고, 한 명의 아들만 있다.
아들이 너무 착하고 공부도 잘해서 인생의 큰 기쁨이었다고 한다.
중학교 때 수녀님 선생님을 만나게 되어 세례를 받고 천주교 신자가 되셨다.
프랑스, 이탈리아 등 유럽을 많이 여행하셨고 천주교 성지를 많이 방문하셨는데 스페인의 성당이 제일 기억에 남는다고 하신다.
여행을 할 때는 다시 올 수 없을지도 모르니 돈 아끼지 말고 하고 싶은 거 많이 해 보는게 좋다고 하셨다.
요즘은 라인댄스 할 때가 제일 재밌다는 할머니!
건강한 몸으로 좋아하시는 여행도 많이 다니시며 여행 이야기도 많이 들려주시길 기대해 본다.
