Whose heart and smile bloom like flowers

Though she spends most of her days in bed due to partial paralysis, she keeps her spirits bright, painting with one hand and spending time in prayer.

​

Born in Gunsan but raised in Seoul, she graduated from the Military Academy of Nursing and served as a military nurse officer at the army hospital in Nonsan. There, she met her future husband, a fellow soldier. Though she loved her work, she stepped away from it after getting married and focused on raising her son and daughter. Today, she has three grandsons and three granddaughters, who study in the U.S. and Japan. She says she misses them dearly.

Her husband, she recalls, was gentle and caring — the kind of man who never let her lift a finger around the house. Sadly, he developed dementia, and caring for him through his illness was an incredibly difficult time. There were days when he would disappear with a packed bag, and the whole family would search for him for days. As the toll of caregiving grew, Grandmother Kim eventually suffered a cerebral infarction, which left half her body immobile. Still, when she thinks of her husband, a soft smile returns to her face.

As a child, her home was filled with chrysanthemums, roses, and tulips, so many that neighbors called it a flower shop. It’s no surprise, then, that she still loves flowers today, her favorite being roses. She also enjoyed art during her school days, and despite her physical limitations, she continues to draw flowers with her one working hand. She’s traveled widely, to the U.S., Canada, and more, and fondly remembers a story about people getting married along flower-lined paths in tulip-filled Canada.

마음도 미소도 꽃같은 김 엘리자베스

 

김 엘리자베스 할머니는 늘 따뜻한 미소로 반겨주십니다. 

몸 반은 쓸 수 없어 침대에서 생활하시지만 한 손으로 좋아하는 그림도 그리고 기도도 하면서 마음만은 밝게 지내시고 계십니다. 

​

군산에서 태어났지만 자라고 생활한 곳은 서울이신 김 엘리자베스 할머니! 

Military Academy of nursing을 졸업하고 논산 훈련소에 있는 군대병원에서  Military nurse officer로 일하셨고, 같이 근무하던 Soldier를 만나 결혼을 했습니다. 일은 너무 보람있고 좋아했지만 결혼하면서 일은 그만두고 아들 딸 키우면서 지내셨습니다. 지금은 손자 3, 손녀 3이 있고 미국, 일본에서 공부를 하고 있고, 자주 보지 못해서 늘 그립다고 합니다. 

 

남편과는 싸우는 일도 없고 남편이 청소, 집안일 다 해 줄 정도로 다정한 사람이었는데 치매(dementia)가 와서 간병하느라 너무 힘든 시간을 보냈습니다. 어느 날 가방을 싸서 사라지면 온가족이 찾느라 며칠을 다니고 했습니다. 몸도 마음도 많이 지치고 힘든 어느 날, 할머니께 Cerebral infarction로 쓰러졌고 몸 반을 못 쓰게 되었습니다. 

지금도 다정했던 남편이 생각난다고 하시면서 얼굴에 미소를 띄었습니다.

어렸을 때 ‘꽃집’이라고 불릴만큼 할머니 집은 국화, 장미, 튜울립 등 꽃이 많았고, 그래서인지 지금도 꽃을 좋아하십니다. 학교 때 미술도 좋아해서 지금도 몸은 힘들지만 한 손으로 꽃을 그리십니다. 미국, 캐나다 등 여행도 많이 다니셨고, 튜울립이 많은 캐나다에서는 꽃이 많은 길에서 결혼도 한다는 에피소드도 들려주셨습니다. 그동안 그렸던 그림들을 보여주면서 즐겁게 설명도 해 주십니다.
