Cheerful Grandma Bokhee Jo
When I visited Grandma Bokhee Jo, she welcomed me warmly with a bright smile.
She carefully opened one of her treasured picture books on the bed and showed me each page she had lovingly colored, explaining every detail.
Though she is 94 years old, she remains healthy enough to attend church every Sunday with her daughter.
She shared the names of the flowers she painted,
explained the meanings behind the Chinese characters,
and showed me beautiful pictures of animals, pottery, and old furniture — all brought to life with her unique touch.
As she looked at drawings of old socks and traditional Korean shoes called “beoseon,” she fondly recalled how embroidered ones were handmade and given as gifts on a child’s first birthday.
Coloring these pictures beautifully is Grandma’s greatest joy.
She spent her life farming and living in this neighborhood,
and even now, she worries deeply about her children with mom’s heart.
She once told me her hands are rough and not pretty from all the years of hard work on the farm, so she tries to hide them.
But to me, her wrinkled hands tell a story — a story of a life lived with strength and love. They are truly beautiful hands.

유쾌한, 조복희 할머니
조복희 할머니를 찾아뵈었을 때, 아주 반갑게 맞아주셨다.
그리고 침대 위에 할머니의 소중한 그림책을 펼쳐서 정성스럽게 색칠한 그림을 하나하나 보여주시며 설명해 주셨다. 94세의 나이지만 매주 일요일 따님과 함께 교회에 다니실 정도로 건강하셨다.
꽃 그림은 꽃 이름을 알려주시고,
한자 그림은 의미를 알려주시고,
동물들도 도자기도 옛날 가구들도 할머니의 색깔로 이쁜 그림이 되어 있었다.
옛날 양말, 버선 그림을 보시며 옛날에는 손수 수를 놓아 첫 생일 때 주었다며 추억도 들려주셨다.
그림을 이쁘게 색칠하는 것이 제일 큰 즐거움이라는 할머니!
요양원이 있는 이 동네에서 농사를 짓고, 생활하셨다는 할머니!
아직도 자식 걱정이 많다는 할머니!
평생 농사 지으며, 아이들을 챙겨서 손이 못생겼다며 손을 숨기신다.
내 눈에는 쭈글쭈글한 할머니 손이지만,
열심히 살아온 할머니의 인생이 느껴져 너무 ‘아름다운 손’으로 보인다.
